No one is truely independent. Humans have always relied upon one another, ever since the first nomads settled in a fixed area and created agriculture. Once men had a surplus of food, some of them could leave the farm and take up more specialized professions, such as scribe or soldier. The greater the surplus of food, the greater the number of people who could become specialized. These specialists then gave back to the farmers; weavers made their clothes, blacksmiths fixed their tools, and soldiers...
